Are richer countries always more Democratic?

This was the question that started it off. Whilst working at The Economist I had the chance to sit in with some incredible Data Journalists spying on their slack channel, learning from them. One such Data Journalist was Marie Segger who ran me through her approaches to stories. One approach is searching through newly produced studies and seeing if any exciting stories jump out like crate digging for vinyls, the other is asking a question and attempting to answer it with data. With that in mind, I noticed that the EIU had released their Democracy Index for 2020 and a question came to me - are richer countries always more democratic?
